Interpretation guide

The Dow: start with the fact that it is price-weighted

The Dow Jones Industrial Average sums the share prices of 30 U.S. blue chips and divides by an adjusted divisor. Influence comes from a stock's price, not its market cap, which makes the Dow a structurally different instrument from the S&P 500 even though both cover U.S. equities.

The quirks of price weighting

A stock trading at 500 dollars carries ten times the influence of one at 50 dollars, regardless of company size. A stock split reduces a company's index contribution without changing the business, a distortion built into the methodology itself.

  • Large point moves often translate into ordinary percentage moves, so always convert before reacting.
  • One or two high-priced constituents can swing the index, so identify the driver on big days.
  • Because of splits and constituent changes, very long-run level comparisons are indicative at best.

What 30 blue chips can tell you

With only 30 names, the Dow leans toward mature industrials, financials, and healthcare rather than technology. That tilt makes it a read on confidence in the real economy and dividend stability, and it typically lags during growth-led markets.

  • Dow outperformance versus the NASDAQ Composite flags a possible rotation into value and cyclicals.
  • Simultaneous new highs in the Dow and the S&P 500 suggest the advance has broadened beyond growth.
  • When only the Dow is weak, check for sector-specific news in industrials or financials first.

Where it connects to Korea

The industrial and consumer blue chips inside the Dow serve as a rough proxy for global real-economy demand. That makes it a useful companion when tracking Korean cyclical exporters in machinery, shipbuilding, and chemicals.

  • During sustained Dow strength, watch the relative performance of KOSPI cyclical large caps.
  • A rising Dow alongside a falling gold-silver ratio is a mutually confirming recovery signal.
  • Counting how many of the 30 constituents advanced beats the headline print for judging real strength.
