Interpretation guide
EUR/USD: reading the dollar cycle from the other side
EUR/USD quotes how many dollars one euro buys, so unlike most major pairs, a rising number means a weaker dollar. It is the most heavily traded currency pair in the world and the largest component of the traditional dollar index by a wide margin, which is why its direction is often read as shorthand for the global dollar cycle itself.
A pair you read in reverse
Unlike USD/KRW or USD/JPY, the euro is the base currency here. A higher print means euro strength and dollar weakness; a lower print means dollar strength. Investors who think in dollar terms need the habit of flipping the sign.
- A rising EUR/USD signals dollar weakness, generally a friendlier backdrop for risk assets and EM.
- A sustained decline marks a dollar-strength phase, pushing in the same direction as USD/KRW upside.
- The parity area near 1.0 is a symbolic boundary that markets remember, giving it outsized psychological weight.
Trends built on the ECB-Fed gap
Medium-term trends in EUR/USD are shaped by the divergence between ECB and Fed policy paths and by the growth and inflation gap between the two regions. Energy matters too: Europe is a net energy importer, so energy price spikes hit the euro twice.
- A Fed tilting dovish while the ECB stays relatively hawkish builds upward pressure on the pair.
- Euro strength tends to hold when European data surprises outpace those in the US.
- During energy spikes, the euro can weaken regardless of rate gaps, so decompose the driver first.
Why it matters from Seoul
EUR/USD rarely moves the Korean market directly, but it works as a leading thermometer for the dollar cycle. Trend turns in this pair have at times shown up before turns in the broad dollar index and USD/KRW, which makes it valuable for cross-checking.
- A EUR/USD rebound coinciding with a topping broad dollar index can give the won and other EM currencies room to breathe.
- In a EUR/USD downtrend, lower confidence in any scenario that assumes USD/KRW will calmly decline.
- Viewing it with US Treasury yields, the US Broad Dollar Index, and KOSPI on TapeFlow helps locate where the dollar cycle stands.
