Interpretation guide
KOSPI trading value: the market's energy meter
KOSPI trading value totals the won amount of shares changing hands on the main board each day, measured in trillions. If price is the market's direction, trading value is the force behind it — the same index gain carries entirely different credibility depending on how much money actually moved to produce it.
Four combinations to read against price
Trading value has no direction of its own, so it must always be paired with the index. Each combination of rising or falling prices with expanding or shrinking turnover tells a different story.
- Gains on expanding turnover are built by new money entering, and tend to last.
- Gains on shrinking turnover mean the buying base is thinning — vulnerable to even modest supply.
- Declines on surging turnover can be capitulation, but they are also where large-scale hand-changing happens.
The two extremes a spike can mean
Days when turnover doubles its usual run are days the market's energy discharges at once. The same spike near the end of a long advance suggests a blow-off top, while at the end of a long decline it suggests washout selling — position, not the spike itself, decides the reading.
- Exploding turnover late in a rally, paired with fading upward momentum, warns of a climactic top.
- Turnover bursting during a plunge while the decline shrinks hints that selling is being absorbed.
- Exclude turnover inflated by derivative events such as quadruple-witching days from any flow signal.
Connecting it to the liquidity gauges
Turnover shows the speed at which waiting money — investor deposits — converts into actual trades. Bundled with the retail liquidity gauges, it reveals what stage the market's participation heat has reached.
- A jump in the turnover-to-deposits ratio on TapeFlow signals sideline cash churning faster — an overheating tell.
- Turnover and margin credit swelling together mark leveraged overheating, amplifying any correction.
- Long dry spells of bottom-range turnover mean attention has left — and, paradoxically, often form the backdrop for bottoms.
