Interpretation guide

Investor deposits: the dry powder waiting to enter Korean stocks

Investor deposits are the cash individuals and corporations keep in brokerage accounts to buy stocks. As money that has not yet become equity, the total is the classic gauge of latent buying power — read alongside margin credit as one of the two pillars of domestic retail liquidity.

What the indicator says

Rising deposits mean money is queuing to move from outside the market in. But context decides the reading: growth during rallies is buying power waiting to deploy, while growth during selloffs is post-liquidation cash sitting out.

  • Deposits rising with the index marks a live inflow cycle.
  • Deposit spikes during declines are post-capitulation cash accumulating on the sidelines.
  • Deposit declines during rising bank deposit rates suggest money leaving equities altogether.

Combining it with other flow gauges

Deposits only make full sense next to margin credit and turnover. The deposit-versus-margin combination separates healthy cash-backed inflows from leverage-driven overheating.

  • Rising deposits with flat margin credit mark a healthy, cash-funded inflow phase.
  • Flat deposits with surging margin credit mark leverage dependence — fragile in corrections.
  • A jumping turnover-to-deposits ratio signals waiting money churning faster — an overheating tell.

Uses and misreads

Absolute deposit levels grow with the market itself, so comparisons against old records mislead. Trend turns and combinations with other liquidity gauges are what work.

  • The recent months' trend matters more than record-high headlines.
  • Spikes around big IPO subscription dates are event effects, not flow signals.
  • Pair with TapeFlow's margin credit balance and retail net buying for the full retail picture.
